unit study: space science

today i'm sharing everything we're using for our space science unit study.

my little guy loves everything that has to do with outer space. he has always been so fascinated with space so overtime we have collected quite the outer space library as well as some other fun space activities which i'll be sharing today.

as i've mentioned in one of my older post about how i plan unit studies once i decide on a topic we'll be covering i like to shop our home to see what materials we have available to us and once i've done that i know what we still need.

first up, i'm sharing the curriculum we're using. i absolutely love the unit studies by the good and the beautiful. they're so well written and are filled with all the information you could possibly need to support your unit study. they come with built in stories, vocabulary that you will use to create a vocabulary wall and they've recently added a student journal which is filled with awesome assignments that support your lessons. for this particular unit study we're using, space science.

next up, are books (our fave)!

for this unit study we're reading:

planeterium, from the welcome to the museum collection

the mysteries of the universe

moon, earth's best friend

sun, one in a billion

earth! my first 4.54 billion years

mars, earthlings welcome

sky gazing: a guide to the moon, sun, planets, stars, eclipses and constellations

a child's introduction to the night sky

the sun and the moon

what's so special about planet earth?

man on the moon

go for the moon, a rocket, a boy, and the first moon landing

one giant leap: the story of neil armstrong

the sun our nearest star

next we have projects!

for projects we completed a kiwi co. box for the solar system and we'll also be using an eyewitness kit space exploration/ space casting kit i found at marshalls but you can find one here on ebay. we also came across a really cool project called planet maker during our visit to the american museum of natural history so we'll be making that as well. i also like to add some art projects into our studies, so jax made some constellations on blue paper using q-tips and white paint and next week we'll be making the aurora borealis using construction paper and chalk pastels. i can't wait for that one!

i always try to incorporate games in all of our subjects even unit studies! there are some really cool games out there if you just take the time to really look. etsy is a great place to find printable games that you can easily print at home and they're also very affordable. for our space unit we have space bingo, a printable space guess who game and a printable planets game die. i also have a couple space puzzles which you can easily find on amazon.

for unit studies i also like to try and have some hands on materials available. things that keep my little engaged. so for this study i made a couple of felt diagrams that jax could figure out how to put together to create both the layers of the sun and the layers of the earth. you can find models on pinterest or just simply look at a photo of the layers and replicate it using felt.

another great and inexpensive way to add information to your studies is through printable learning materials. there are so many printable learning materials out there. i tend to use etsy and teachers pay teachers to find all of my printable materials. i have a list of the etsy shops where i tend to purchase most of my materials on my "how to plan a unit study" post so be sure to check out that list there.

for christmas my son was gifted a yoto player and it has been such an amazing learning tool in our home. my son uses it pretty much every day. so for this unit study we're using the planets and the solar system card where he's learning so much about the planets, stars and beyond! i definitely recommend adding one of these yoto players to your homeschool if possible. you won't regret it!

last but not least, field trips guys! field trips will teach your kiddos so much about the topics you are covering with unit studies. field trips bring learning to life! they allow your children to see, feel, smell, touch and even taste sometimes the things they are learning about. definitely take the time to explore museums that may have exhibits on what you are learning. if you live in nyc like we do, the american museum of natural history is the perfect place to take your kiddo to explore outer space. i mean, just look at the photo i shared above. my son was in awe of the natural beauty that surrounded him in that museum. it was truly magical.

well folks, that just about sums up our space unit. i hope i'm not forgetting anything! as always if you have any questions about any of these resources or any questions in general please don't hesitate to comment on this post or shoot me an email! i would love to hear from you!

have fun learning y'all!
